The Real Difference Between Regular And Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

What’s the difference between enameled cast iron and pre-seasoned cast iron? Let’s look at the difference between of them.

Coating difference

Enameled cast iron is cast iron coated with layers of glass enamel glaze. This coating enhances the non-stick function of the cookware and prevents rust. Also makes the cookware easier  cleaning. Enameled cast iron cookware also doesn't require the seasoning, and the enamel coating cookware won't react to acidic and alkaline foods.

Pre-seasoned cast iron is cast iron coated with a lay of vegetable oil, so it needs to be seasoned after each use, otherwise the cast iron will rust (seasoning is fat polymerizations, oils, and fats are transformed at high heat to adhere to the pan as a non-stick film). Seasoned cast iron is very durable, it can last for centuries without denting or deteriorating. But, seasoned cast iron can  react to the acidic and alkaline foods, so it’s not recommended to cook acidic food, such as tomatoes.

Color difference

The obvious advantage of enamel cast iron is that it comes in a variety of beautiful colors, the color can be glossy gradient, glossy single or matt colors. In a word, there are different colors that you can purchase to match your existing cookware, place settings or kitchen decor.

And about the seasoned cast iron, there are not so many choices in colors as the enameled cast iron, it is only one version, that is Black color.

Price difference:

The price of enameled cast iron is more expensive, but it comes a wide of colors and models selection. The gorgeous colors are too attractive.

Seasoned cast-iron is much cheaper, it’s around 50% cheaper than enameled cast iron, it depends on different items.

Cooktop Compatibility

Both enameled cast iron and seasoned cast iron are suitable for all heat sources and any type of stovetop, such as gas, induction, ceramic, halogen, electric and oven. Seasoned cast iron also can be used on camping grills for outdoor cooking, while enameled cast iron is mostly used for indoor cooking.
